STRATEGIES FOR CHOOSING LOCATION OF WINTER NESTS OF THAUMETOPOEA PITYOCAMPA (DENIS & SCHIFFERMÜLLER, 1775) IN THREE PINE FORESTS OF BORDJ BOU ARRERIDJ REGION (ALGERIA)

 Abstract

Description of the subject: The pine processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Shiff.) Is the main defoliating pest that severely damages the pine forests of Aleppo in the Mediterranean basin. In Algeria, this insect pest is present in all coniferous forests.

Objective: Evaluation of certain abiotic parameters of forests on the frequency and intensity of attack by the T. pityocampa

Methods: the variability of the altitude, the cardinal orientation of winter nests, the height and the phytochemicals composition of the Aleppo pine trees are studied.

Results: The number of winter nests appears not to have been affected by the effect of altitude and height of trees. The caterpillars set up its winter nests in the south and west cardinal direction at an altitude of 698 to 928 m and above this altitude the position of the nests changes towards the east and north side. The polyphenols content in the attacked and non-attacked trees of P. halepensis revealed a highly significant difference. The flavonoids contents of healthy and attacked P. halepensis showed a non-significant difference.

Conclusion: T. pityocampa attack the trees of P. halepensis whatever the region and altitude. Installation preferences for winter nests are in the East-South cardinal direction. Polyphenols are abundant in healthy trees more than the trees attacked.
