Conclusion : L’huile essentielle de P. aquilinum L. présente une toxicité potentielle vis à vis A. fabae.

BIO-APHICIDAL POTENTIAL OF ALGERIAN PTERIDIUM AQUILINUM LINNE ESSENTIAL OIL AGAINST APHIS FABAE (HEMIPTERA : APHIDIDAE)

 Abstract

Description of the subject : Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum Linne) belongs to Dennstaedtiaceae family. This species has a cosmopolitan distribution. Lack of knowledge of its biological virtues has prompted us to evaluate the use of it essential oil as a bio-aphicide.

Objective:  As part of the research for a new alternative control, we evaluated the aphicidal activity of P. aquilinum L. essential oil against one of the most important agricultural pests the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.).

Methods: The essential oil of P. aquilinum L. fronds was obtained by hydrodilatation. Its aphicidal activity was evaluated by contact toxicity method. Five concentrations of P. aquilinum L. essential oil were applied topically on the aphid’s dorsal thorax. Their mortality was evaluated after 12h, 24h, 36h and 48h. The percentage of corrected mortality as well as the lethal doses 50% and 90% were calculated.

Results:  The results obtained reveal that P. aquilinum L. essential oil was efficient to A. fabae. This toxicity was increased with concentration and time. The application of 80μl/ml, 40μl/ml and 20μl/ml of the essential oil caused 96.49%, 84.21% and 82.46% mortality, respectively, after 48h. The LD50 was 27.79 μl/ml and 4.26μl/ml after 24h and 48h of treatment, respectively.

Conclusion: P. aquilinum L. essential oil has a potential toxicity against A. fabae. The results obtained could contribute to the development of new potential bio-aphicidal agent.
