IDENTIFICATION AND MAPPING OF NATURAL HABITATS OF TONGA LAKE

(EL-KALA, ALGERIA)

Abstract

Description of the subject: This is an ecological study of the natural habitats of Tonga Lake, a classified wetland in El-Kala National Park, with the use of GIS for location and spatial delineation.

Objective: The identification and digital mapping of the main natural habitats for better management of the study area.

Methods: The methodology first includes the collection, sorting and evaluation of existing data, field prospecting and finally the application of a GIS. These results can be incorporated into databases, to allow for more accurate analysis and modeling.

Results: 230 surveys on the vegetation of the site, identified 16 natural habitats, among which 10 habitats belong to the lacustrine vegetation and 6 habitats to the marsh vegetation.

The lake vegetation is characterized by submerged vegetation (1 habitat), emergent vegetation (8 habitats) and floating vegetation (1 habitat). The dominant habitat of the study site is Nénupharaie, which is distributed in the center of the site, then we find the Saulaie belt, the Scirpaie and the Sparganaie.

Conclusion: The results obtained on the biodiversity of Tonga Lake, constitute a new approach in the context of rational management and effective conservation of this type of environment.

The cartographic approach used confirms the importance of GIS in the management of natural resources.
