IDENTIFICATION OF THE MAJOR FUNGAL AGENTS CAUSING DIEBACK WILT AND ROOT ROT DISEASES OF OLIVE SEEDLINGS IN WESTERN ALGERIA

Abstract

Description of the subject: Surveys of three nurseries in western Algeria have shown the presence of several cases of dieback on olive seedlings.

Objective : The objective of this study is to identify the mycoflora associated with olive trees in the nursery with the symptom of dieback and root rot and to evaluate the pathogenesis of the isolated species.

Methods : Isolations are made of the rhizosphere, roots and stems of dieback olive plants. The developed fungi are purified and identified according to the morphological characteristics. Artificial inoculations are performed on seedlings of the Sigoise variety aged 6 to 8 months. The plants are soaked for 30 min in a spore suspension of F. solani and F. oxysporum and R. solani. Symptoms are recorded at 10-day intervals for two months after inoculation. The severity of the disease was assessed using the 0-5 class scale.

Results : The results revealed the presence of dieback with a% ranging from 10 to 30%. The% of fungal isolates are variable : FS (20.98%) Trichoderma sp. (12.45%), R. sp (10.57%), FO (10%) Penicillium sp. (9%), Phoma sp. (8%) Alternaria sp. (5.89%), V. dahlia (4%), Pythium sp. (6%) The results of the pathogenicity tests revealed IM varying between 80% for RS, FS (70%) and FO (66.67%) after 2 months of inoculation.

Conclusion : The symptoms observed in nursery olive trees are the result of a fungal complex comprising several primary and secondary pathogens contributing to the appearance of various symptoms.
